Join the Walk for Justice with GCN!

On September 18, 2005, thousands of people will join together to walk for peace, justice and social change. The Walk for Justice , sponsored by the Headwaters Foundation, is an annual 5k community fundraising event for grassroots organizations in Minnesota working for social justice and community building. This unique event is an opportunity for participants to raise awareness, solidarity, visibility and financial support for the part they play in positively impacting our corner of the world.

Global Citizens Network would love to have you join us! You can support GCN either by joining our team, helping raise funds, and walking, or you can participate by donating a gift to our team. By being a part of this special event, you’ll be helping us to celebrate the important work being done in our communities—both locally and across the world. Visit www.walkforjustice.org to show your support by joining us to walk or by making a donation to help us continue our valuable work.

 Words from Peru

This past August a team of GCN volunteers went to Peru on an exploratory trip. GCN had been invited by a Peruvian non-governmental organization named JIREH to partner with them more than two years ago; this summer we were finally able to meet face to face. The team spent a wonderful week with members of JIREH, visiting their current projects located in the countryside as well as in towns. JIREH works with communities to address basic needs, and works with the community to design and implement the projects themselves, in a style and manner grown from within. JIREH’s approach to community development is one that appears sustainable, respectful and enabling. GCN is honored to partner compatible values and philosophy with this organization.

At the end of our week together, a JIREH member told us that they had been apprehensive about our visit; they weren’t quite sure what to expect of us. He had feared, in fact, that we as Americans, might be arrogant and smug in our knowledge. Instead, he said he was relieved to find the stereotype disproved by us, and was glad to rid himself of that misconception. They eagerly await the next GCN team.

When JIREH learned of Hurricane Katrina and its devastating impact, they sent us an email message of solidarity, entitled “Estamos Con Ustedes” (We Are with You). Our pain was theirs. Humbled, I responded in Spanish as battered as the Gulf Coast, that their message and sentiment truly demonstrated that global friendship connects people, separated by distance but related in heart, as one. This truly is the essence of networking, of being and acting as global citizens, of valuing cultural understanding. Estamos con ustedes.

Learning, Serving, Living: The cycle of the global citizen

What is it that makes a relationship with Global Citizens Network so special? Why is it that our experiences with GCN are unlike anything else we've experienced in traveling the world? As travelers and global citizens, we understand that our experiences--working with a women's coop in Mexico, building a health clinic in Kenya, engaging with school children in Nepal--are more than adventures to other parts of the world. These experiences form our ways of living. They inform our thinking, nourish our spirits, and shape the ways we live--both during our time in Mexico, Kenya and Nepal, as well as at home in our own communities. As a growing network of global citizens, we learn about one another, so that we are best able to serve each other, and to live our lives in ways that connect us.

Still, it's an ongoing process! How do you continue to become a global citizen? What ways have your experiences with GCN translated into changes in your life? Tell us--and others--about it!

 GCN Power Point Presentation Available

Have you wanted to host a gathering, formal or informal, to tell people about GCN, but didn’t know how to do it? Don’t think you know enough about “the big picture” to speak with others? Thanks to the efforts of a very talented marketing intern, we can now make available to you a CD about GCN. Created as a Power Point presentation, all you need is a computer to show it on. The CD will provide the facts, you as presenter can provide what the GCN experience meant to you personally.

Please contact the GCN office if you are interested in receiving a CD and expanding the network.

 Continuing Education for Educators!

If you’re a teacher and need Continuing Education Units to maintain your certification, why not earn them while traveling with GCN? You could go to a conference or spend summer in a classroom, but doesn’t it sound more exciting to visit a primary school and sing with Maasai children under an acacia tree near Mount Kilimanjaro, or practice your Spanish with children in Guatemala who laugh at your pronunciation, or greet the morning sun from a Navajo hogan in New Mexico? Consider using some of your break from school to continue your lifelong learning across the world. It’s possible that you can earn up to ten (10) CEU hours per GCN week. Contact the GCN office for details.

Thank you for all you do and the many ways you support GCN!

We hope to see you on a trip soon! Remember:
Returning volunteers receive a $50.00 discount!
